Our Mission Statement

The Contra Costa County Association of Science and Mathematics Educators is dedicated to providing continued education on a regular basis for teachers of science and mathematics through newsletters and conferences. Our goal is to expose as many science and mathematics teachers as possible to a variety of new educational techniques, tools, and methods in order to enhance the science and mathematics learning in grades K-12.

In April of 1992,a group of dedicated educators, some local science and math leaders, had their first face-to-face meeting to brainstorm the logistics necessary to hold a special conference, the first of its kind, for the teachers of Contra Costa County. These people, who came together at the County Office for the preliminary meetings, started what is now known as C³ASME.

The first conference took place at Acalanes Adult School. Much work went into that first conference, and there were fewer members than there were overhead projectors for presentations! Now, over 1,000 members attend the conference. Each attendee is welcomed into the Association and encouraged to add their volunteer support. Every year for one Saturday these dedicated educators present and attend workshops because they care about the education of children.

Founders: Tim Aaronson, Richard Merrill, Phil Dowling, Rollie Otto, Gary Nakagiri, Mez Chafe-Powles, Jim Rybolt, Dave Nickles, Jim McDonald, Guillermo Trejo, Janel Hornbeck, and Gretchen Gilfillan.

Past Presidents: Dave Nichols, Mez Chafe-Powles, Teresa Trejo-Mejia, Barbara Jarred, and Diane Coventry.
